چکیده

Courts are an important element in the institutional framework of labor markets, often determining the actual degree of employment protection. German labor courts provide a vivid example in this regard. However, we know relatively little about actual court behavior. A unique data set on German labor court verdicts reveals that social and other criteria like employee characteristics, the type of job, local labor market conditions, and court composition influence court decisions. At least as striking is that workers’ chances to win depend on where and when their cases are filed generating considerable ex-ante uncertainty about outcomes. JEL: J41, J65, K31, K41

Does home ownership really cause unemployment? Evidence from German regional data

Using German regional data for 1998, 2002 and 2006, this study reexamines the Oswald hypothesis, the conjecture that high levels of home ownership are linked to inferior outcomes in regional labor markets. Applying a set of controls for regional unemployment rates, three different econometric models are specified and estimated: a cross-sectional model, a pooled data model, and a model taking in...

Editing and multiply imputing German establishment panel data to estimate stochastic production frontier models

This paper illustrates the effects of item-nonresponse in surveys on the results of multivariate statistical analysis when estimation of productivity is the task. To multiply impute the missing data a data augmentation algorithm based on a normal/Wishart model is applied. Data of the German IAB Establishment Panel from waves 2000 and 2001 are used to estimate the establishment’s productivity. T...
